Hamilton: Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr Says La Liga Belongs to Racists

Hamilton, the musical about Alexander Hamilton, serves both to criticize America’s current political realities and celebrate musical theatre history – in some ways representing an indictment of America’s Founding Fathers.

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior has been subject to racist abuse during La Liga this season and believes racism to be “normalized” there; therefore football governing bodies need to do more in order to stop it.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.: ‘Devastating’ abuse ’brings up emotions’

Vinicius Junior took to social media after being subjected to racist abuse during Real Madrid’s 1-0 La Liga loss at Valencia on Sunday to declare, “La Liga belongs to racists.” Throughout this season he has endured horrific abuse during away matches – accompanying his impressive rise within Spain with regular instances of racism.

Evidently, Vinicius attempted to bring to the attention of referee Miguel Campillo fans behind him who were making monkey chants during a match at Mestalla. As Vinicius pointed them out to an official, play was temporarily stopped while Vinicius identified those fans.

This incident has reignited debate in Spain as to whether LaLiga is doing enough to combat racism. According to CNN in March, LaLiga only has the power to report incidents of racist abuse; ultimately the RFEF and regional prosecutors must determine punishment. LaLiga has since sought an amendment of Spanish law giving them greater sanctioning powers so it can effectively combat racism.

Vinicius Jr.: ‘I’m sorry’

La Liga president Javier Tebas issued a half-hearted apology after engaging in a Twitter battle with Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr over his reaction to racist abuse he experienced from Valencia fans during their side’s 1-0 loss at Mestalla Stadium. Vinicius Jr took to social media, alleging that Spain and La Liga belonged to racists after receiving abuse at Valencia Stadium.

Tebas accused the 22-year-old Brazilian of failing to appear at meetings he had scheduled with him about ways of fighting racism in Spanish football, and alleged that as he left Valencia fans’ support upon being sent off for striking Hugo Duro, he made gestures towards them while walking off.

Vinicius Jr hit back, noting he would not allow himself to be bullied by Tebas, while asserting it would be unfair for any suggestion to suggest he was disrespectful to Valencia’s fans. Additionally, he accused Tebas of making himself equal with racists.

Vinicius Jr.: ‘Racism is normal in La Liga’

Real Madrid star Isco lashed out at Spain’s top league and its president on social media after being subjected to racist abuse during his club’s loss at Valencia on Sunday. Isco stopped play at one point to identify any fans he believed were abusing him before being pulled away by team-mates and left off the pitch.

He wrote: ‘Racism in La Liga has become normalized; both competition and Federation view it positively and opponent teams often encourage it.’

Kick It Out, an anti-discrimination group, said the abuse suffered by Vinicius at Mestalla Stadium is unacceptable and called on Spain to do more to combat racism within its game.

La Liga officials told CNN that they do not punish opponents for racist chanting; rather they refer the matter to the federation and local prosecutors who handle legal cases before any sporting sanctions are issued.

Vinicius Jr.: ‘The championship belongs to racists’

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been subjected to racist abuse on and off the pitch this season, both on and off. An effigy was hung from a bridge in Madrid in January; Spanish police are currently looking into an incident where fans called his bus, which arrived at Mestalla Stadium, “Monkey”.

Vinicius took to social media following his dismissal for violent conduct during Valencia’s 1-0 defeat to condemn those who attacked him and targeted his position as a player. ‘Today the championship belongs to racists instead of Ronaldinho, Cristiano and Lionel Messi!’ wrote Vinicius.

Kick It Out, the anti-discrimination body, also condemned the allegations of racism against Vinicius and demanded action from the Spanish league. They stated: ‘We have witnessed repeated episodes of racism directed towards Vinicius which require more than public apologies – now is the time for criminalizing these incidents and handing sporting punishments against clubs’
